Confessions From A Self-Proclaimed Packrat...

I've been on a cleaning tangent for the past couple of months. Cleaning out my house, and my parents house of all the things I've accumulated over the years. I'm the type of person who can't let go of ANYTHING. The week before last, I took 3 huge trashbags of purses out of my house, and still have more than I need. I keep things that I so don't need. Brochures, magazines, make-up cases, toys, and that's only the beginning.

It was only recently that I realized, I could let go of these things. I held onto things because they held memories for me. I finally realized that, it's ok to let them go, that other people could make their own memories with my things-- and even better than that, when I donate them, people who, most likely, wouldn't be able to afford these things are able to have them to make their own memories. It really makes me happy to be able to give to others, while cleaning the clutter out of my life.

So, if you're a packrat, like I was, it's OK to let things go. Hold onto the things that are really special to you, but let go of the rest. Give them to others to make memories with, too!

Giving things away is a little scary at first. However, for me, it makes me feel free to go on with things. I have divided my life into stages and have kept a little of each one but don't want to dwell on or live in the past.

I SO get you here Christy. I used to hold on to everything and I went through a phase similar to what you are describing...letting go felt so good to me...like a breath of fresh air...like I was disobeying something, but I didn't care. Does that make sense? ;)

I learned that I am a much happier person when I live in the now and not in the past as I used to. I have been a much happier and more motivated person once I was able to "let go".

Funny thing about being a packrat, or as I like say, a collector, is that you can never remember where you got all that stuff.

Hope you are doing well Christy.

Cleaning out 'stuff' is a hard job!

My husband is a pack rat and weve had most of our huge fights over his 'junk'.

I throw out or give everything away that I can....I hate clutter.

My husband thinks I am nuts because I do that.

Anyhow, kudos to you for de-cluttering. You'll feel TONS better

ummm, I could use a new bag.....so if your tossing any LouisV. or something similar, Ill send you some postage money...:)

We've moved alot so we've decluttered everytime we packed up to change locations but according to the movers last May, I still have way too much stuff.

I'm on the other side of the spectrum, here. I keep very few material items...and I realize this stems from problems I dealt with when growing up. When I read your post I thought of my desk at work. If you'd walk up to it right now you'd never know that I use it on a daily basis...that anyone uses it...there is nothing personal on it. My coworkers ride me all the time as to why I don't even bring a picture of my kids. I don't know. I just don't. Reading about packrats is fascinating to me...I just can't understand why someone would accumulate and keep so much 'stuff'! I think I need a little more 'packrat' in my personality...can ya help me out here, sweetie? :)

I have a rule. If it's more than a year old, I let it go. I started becoming a packrat and didn't realize it. I was like, "HUH? Why am I holding on to this???" But I realized it was the memories I was holding on to.

There was a lady that lived down the street from me. Her house was so full of things in her past, that it overflowed out into her porch. You could barely walk in there. There was a path made through boxes and trash to get to her kitchen. We used to go and check in on her because she was older, and needed some help. But she would not let go of things... She refused. She still lives that way too. She moved, and so did all of her things.

YOU THREW OUT PURSES???? MAN, you know you could have posted them on here and a million women would have bitch fought for them! Me included!!

I throw away stuff all the time. BUT, hubby and Miss Pinky love to keep crap! So, I have to wait till they aren't here so I can get rid of some of it. Terrible, I know, but my goodness! The crap could eat me alive!!

HUGS!
